Cardiac arrests in babies occur due to lack of oxygen. Drowning and choking are the common causes of cardiac arrest in babies. If you are sure that the baby has an airway obstruction, you must perform first aid for choking. But if you are not sure why the baby is not breathing, you must perform CPR.

Here is how you can perform CPR for babies.

Place the baby on his back on a flat surface, such as a table or a ground. Think of a horizontal line between the baby’s nipples. Now place two fingers below this line, in the center of the chest. Gently compress the chest about 1.5 inches. Pump the heart at a rate of 100 compressions in one minute. Doing so would help restore blood circulation.

The next step of CPR is to clear the airway. After giving 30 compressions, gently tip the head of the baby back by lifting the chin with your one hand and pushing down on the forehead with the other hand. Put your ear close to the baby’s mouth and check for breathing. Look for chest motion and listen for breath sounds. You may be able to feel for breath on your cheek and ears.

The third crucial step of CPR is breathing for the infant. Cover the mouth of the baby with your mouth and nose. Give two rescue breaths. If the baby’s chest doesn’t rise, examine his mouth to ensure there is no foreign material inside the mouth. If there is any object, sweep it out with your finger. If the airway is still blocked, give two breaths after every 30 chest compressions. Continue CPR until the baby starts breathing again or medical help arrives.
